Please pass the rice cereal

That's right - I had my first taste of the good stuff last night!  At my four month doctor's appointment Dr. Moore told us that he recommends waiting between 5 and 6 months for solids and to watch for a few signs of me being ready to go.  I already had the sitting up with assistance and sleeping through the night parts down, but so far I hadn't shown much interest in anything my parents are doing other than playing with me.  That is until last night...

I was playing with Daddy while Mommy ate dinner and I was watching her like a HAWK!!  I followed her fork from her plate to her mouth the whole time and none of their usual tricks worked to get me off focus..... so my parents heard the ESP messages I was sending and decided to sit me down for some rice cereal along with my 8:00 bottle!!

I got in my Bumbo chair and had to sit there patiently while Mom kept messing up the measurements and consistency, then couldn't decide between the two flavors Santa brought.... but soon enough we were finally ready to go.

First bite = DELICIOUS!  AND I didn't spit it all out like Mom expected!  She was ready for a big fat mess, but I did so well!
Initially I was more interested in trying to hold the spoon (that's what you get for letting me play with my spoons, Mom) and bring it to my mouth by myself but I decided to play along and let them baby me for a little while longer.

Ohhh, I want that!!

I got messier as I went and ate about 3/4 of the bowl until I was ready for the comfort of my bottle.

I drank 5 more ounces and then definitely needed bath time!

Five Months

Wow, life sure is flying by! Five months already!!

This month was so much fun between Christmas (that will be a whole 'nother post), continuing to discover so many new things and biggest news of all ..... learning to roll over!!  I have been rocking back and forth for awhile, but finally started rolling!  Even though they say tummy to back is the easiest, I like a challenge so I did back to tummy first.  Now I hardly do any tummy time because as soon as I lay down I immedaitely flip and smile so big.  Its a fun game to play with my parents because they turn me back on my tummy since I'm supposed to do tummy time every day, but I just roll right back over.

Step one: start on your tummy

Step two... the lean

Step three ... Roll!!!!

I'm such a wonderful baby, I'm so happy, content and lots of gummy smiles.  I have a few fits, but maybe a couple of times a week, if that, mostly I just love being held, walked around or playing with my favorite toy which is still my play mat (I've learned to turn myself a full 360 by all my rocking around)!  My bumble bee rattle and crinkle book round out the top 3 faves.

Playing with my Bee and reading my crinkle book with Uncle Neal while he's home from college
I love to be on the move and when I'm not rolling over I recently discovered my toes and love to grab hold of my feet (pull my socks off) and just rock back and forth like that just smiling the whole time.

I giggle all the time, especially when Dad plays with me.  I love laying on my blanket and he'll say BOO real loud in my face, it always surprises me and I always laugh.  I could play that game for hours!!  Mom lays me on her lap and sings while she plays with my feet and that usually gets me going too.  But, I'm very easy to please so far!

On Christmas Day (the day before I turned five months old), I held my own bottle the whole time until it was empty!!  I"ve been kinda interested in my bottle for awhile, I'll always grab on to Mom or Dad's hands while they feed me and every now and then hold it myself.  But I definitely know what my bottle is and open wide as soon as I see it!  Even if Mom or Dad hasn't even sat down to feed me yet - if they don't do it quick I start kicking and waving my arms to make sure they know I'm ready to eat!!

Look what I can do!
I still take a pacifier when I sleep and learned that I can pull it out of my mouth by myself!  Sometimes I'll put it back in, but mostly I stare at it in my hand and get so excited about what I did, that I'll wave my arms all around but then drop it in the commotion. I'm learning quick though to pick it back up if its still within reach!

Everything I touch ends up in my mouth in about 5 seconds, so Mom pretty much only wears pony tails and no jewelry anymore.  Anything that is out of my reach but I want, I just reach my hand out and then open and close my fingers until either I get taken over to what I want, or lose sight of it.  My parents faces are always within reach though, and I've been grabbing a hold of their noses and ears a lot lately.  If I don't have a toy or anything fun within reach I just wring my hands together.

I do love to smile, but can get pretty serious sometimes when I concentrate on one thing.  I have a face my great-Grandma Doris calls my Shirely Temple face where I furrow my eyebrows and make a pout with my lips.

I talk all the time too unless there are lots of people around, then I'd rather listen to hear what all is going on.  At those times I'll smile when someone starts talking to me, but otherwise I'm just taking it all in.  Practicing my good manners already!

I  got lots of new toys for Christmas that are too heavy to lift up to my mouth so, so I realized that to get to chew I've gotta bend down and face plant on them.  I keep getting told I'm teething since I chew and drool on everything but so far no teeth!

I still eat five times a day, sometimes all bottles and sometimes Mom nurses me - just depends on what her work schedule is that day.  My first and last meals are up to 7 ounces each and Mom wants to make sure I stay sleeping all night long so I always get bottles for those two feedings.  Santa brought me some rice cereal in my stocking so looks like I might be venturing out into the solid world pretty soon!  I can't wait!  I've been a great eater since day one but I'll keep you posted how this next step goes.

I'm on a very good schedule of needing a nap an hour and a half after my bottles and my naps get shorter as the day goes on.  You'd think after sleeipng 11 hours my first nap would be so quick, but I gotta get a good one in and gear up for the day!  As soon as I see my parents coming to get me out of bed I give a huge smile and lift my arms a little for them to pick me up.

I have lots of fun on the changing table and like to rock back and forth or pick up my hiney to make it a little more challenging to put on my new diaper.  It's a very fun game and makes me smile the whole time.

I've been spending more time in my bumbo chair and jumper learning how to really hold my head up on my own.  I'm still a little wobbly sometimes but I've almost got it.  No matter what I'm doing I'm usually happy, unless I think I've been left alone.  The crib is the only place I'm content to hang out otherwise I do not like to be by myself!!  I definitely remember my Mom and Dad even when they leave the room and keep looking in their direction (or making lots of loud noises) until they come back to me.

Helping Mommy cook!
Taking a quick break...

Speaking of, I have some new funny noises.  I can make my voice go high and low now, so I'll say AHHH and just run up and down my whole range for about 10 seconds.  My favorite thing to do is stick my tongue and blow bubbles.

I LOVE bathtime!  I just started playing with my rubber ducky and some other fun animals, but really just like to stick my hand under the water and feel around.  Its so fun to watch the water and splash!  I stick my legs straight out and keep them elevated the whole bath time.  Mom thinks its because I don't like my feet to touch water, but its my only chance to work on my abs!!

My hair has a mind of its own and just sticks straight up.  It has zero curl to it like my dad's did, and will not lay down flat no matter how much lotion my Mom puts on it.  It was so dark when I was born and now looks light brown because of all the blonde that is growing in place.  My eyelashes are still really dark and thick around my grey-blue eyes.  No one in my family has blue eyes, so it'll be neat if they actually stay that color, but doubtful!

Did I mention I can count to three already?!?  That's right, I'm a genius! :)  When we play airplane, Mom and Dad will count to three before they lift me up and I'm so smart I start giggling on two, sometimes even one because I know what's coming on the count of three!!!

Here's some pictures of me hanging out with my family this month....

With Grandad and Grandy.  I can see my bottle... why is it not in my hands?

Happy birthday Grandy

Checking out Uncle Ross & Aunt Becky's new house!

Singing with Sau Sau
Mom definitely needs to be better about taking my picture especially when family comes to visit - its all about the memories Mom!  Hopefully she will step up her game in the next few months...

Its been such a busy month and I'm sure I forgot lots of my funny quirks, but I'll try to take more breaks to update my blog for everyone!  Thanks for checking in on me!

Love, Emma

SANTA!!! I know him!!

Oh my gosh you guys - I met SANTA CLAUS this week!!!!   We always go to NorthPark and mom has said its a magical place, but who knew that its even better now that Santa lives there!!  I can't lie - at first when we walked into his house I was like "Mom, who is this guy and what's with the beard?" but when she told me it was Santa I perked up and smiled so big!  I can't wait to see what he leaves me this year because I've been such a good girl!

I love Santa!
